Lara Carlson quoted in fitness article about ‘spot toning’

Lara Carlson, DPE., FACSM, CSCS, associate professor in the Westbrook College of Health Professions and the Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences, contributed to an article about targeting specific muscle groups when exercising.

The article, titled, “Spot Toning Is Possible (But Here’s How It Really Works),” discussed the difference between spot toning and spot reduction and whether those strategies are effective. Carlson was quoted several times throughout the piece. “Individuals who want to have certain muscles or muscle groups look more defined can specifically train those areas, but unless they do something to decrease body fat, they may never see those muscles,” she said.
