Dean Douglas Wood co-writes book about the expansion of osteopathic medical education
Douglas Wood, D.O., Ph.D., FACOI, dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine and vice president for Health Affairs, recently co-wrote a book titled Medical School Expansion in the 21st Century. It was published by the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation.
The number of students enrolled in osteopathic medical schools has more than doubled since the turn of the century as a result of several new schools being established across the country, as well as existing schools opening satellite campuses.
The book was co-written by Michael Whitcomb, M.D., who has previously written reviews of new allopathic medical schools. This book combines Wood鈥檚 expertise in osteopathic medical education with Whitcomb鈥檚 expertise in allopathic medical education to identify similarities and differences between new and existing colleges of osteopathic medicine, as well as differences between new osteopathic and allopathic schools. Wood and Whitcomb put this information into the context of the current state of the healthcare system and discuss what the expansion means for the future.
