David Livingstone Smith cited in 'New York Times' blog

On October 12, 2014, the work of David Livingstone Smith, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Philosophy, was cited in The New York Times' 鈥淥pinionator鈥 blog by philosopher Kate Manne.

Manne's blog, titled 鈥淚n Ferguson and Beyond, Punishing Humanity,鈥 discusses the controversial September 26th events in Ferguson, Missouri, during which an unarmed black teenager, Michael Brown, was shot and killed by a white police officer, Darren Wilson.

Manne echoes the message of Smith's book, Less Than Human: Why We Demean, Enslave, and Exterminate Others: that people are treated brutally because those who mistreat them do not understand their common humanity.
