Ali Ahmida interviewed by BBC radio on recent Libyan election

Ali Abdullatif Ahmida, Ph.D., professor and chair of the UNE political science program, was interviewed about the recent Libyan election and the future of Libya's transition on BBC Radio 5 Aug. 8, 2012.

Ahmida told BBC listeners that the election is a step forward when 62 percent of the Libyan people participated with energy and commitment despite all odds. Yet the main challenge is not just the lack of an army and police force and the spread of arms and militias but the lack of political compromise and the process of reconciliation among all groups, especially the ones that supported the old regime, including the one million exiled Libyans in Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco and Niger.

Ahmida is the author of The Making of Modern Libya: State Formation, Colonialization and Resistance, and several other books on Libya and North Africa.  Find out more about Ahmida and read and listen to a number of his other recent interviews.
