The on May 26, 2011 ran a large front-page photo of Massabesic Middle School students hurling oranges into the mouth of the Saco River from Freddy's Beach at the UNE Biddeford Campus.

The students were taking part in a series of activities at UNE on May 25th as part of UNE's SPARTACUS Graduate Fellowship Program, which is funded by the National Science Foundation. The orange throwing was part of a river flow experiment to learn about environmental conditions such as winds and currents.

During their visit to UNE the 90 eighth-grade students also visited the UNE Marine Science Center to learn about marine research and marine mammal rehabilitation.  The students also spent time in the labs with UNE's researchers.

The SPARTACUS program connects university researchers and their graduate students with the K-12 community.
