Bangor Daily News reports on kickoff of campaign in support of Question 2 dental bond
A story in the on Oct. 4, 2010 reports on the kickoff of a statewide campaign by the advocacy group Dental Care for ME in support of Ballot Question 2 which seeks to improve dental care in the state. If voters approve the bond on Nov. 2nd, $3.5 million would be available for a teaching clinic associated with a dental college, and $1.5 million would be spent on upgrading facilities and equipment and expanding capacity at existing nonprofit dental health clinics throughout the state. UNE is a likely contender for the teaching clinic. Kneka Smith, associate dean for planning at UNE, said that UNE's planned dental school will cost a total of $20 million to get up and running and is already on track, pending funding, to admit its first class of students in 2013. The program will place fourth-year students in community internships at nonprofit dental clinics throughout the state, where they will provide comprehensive dental services for children and adults under the supervision of a licensed dentist.
